The Breakthrough

From Selective Mutism to Leading a Peer Support Group

A 7th grader in Connecticut arrived at school each day without speaking. Diagnosed with selective mutism and social anxiety, she had been overlooked by traditional school services. When an SBHSN-funded clinician was placed at her school, everything changed.

Through months of patient, culturally responsive, one-on-one work, the clinician helped her build trust, develop coping strategies, and eventually find her voice. By the end of the school year, she was not only speaking in class but leading a peer support group for other students facing similar challenges.

The Road Ahead

Expanding to 820 Additional Schools

Our next phase of growth will bring qualified mental healthcare professionals to hundreds of new campuses, deepening our reach in underserved communities across America.
